Maintenance
Regular maintenance
of your septic system can keep it running smoothly for years
with little cost in terms of labor, materials and time. With
as little as a 15 minutes, each month you could save yourself
hundreds if not thousands of dollars down the road. So it is
in your own best interests to perform the basic maintenance
your septic system needs to keep it running at optimal efficiency.

One quick maintenance
tip is to keep the drainage/leech field clear of debris such
as large amounts of leaves, shrubs, overgrow roots, and anything
else which might inhibit the normal operation of the field.
The drainage field needs air to work properly and anything which
stops the normal aeration of the field could cause it to stop
working properly and ultimately stop working all together. A
drainage field is the most expensive part of a septic system
and its not something you want to replace.
Another maintenance
tip is to regularly check the status of the inlet and outlet
of the septic tank. If you are physically able to, it is recommended
to open the access hatches to the septic tank, peer inside and
check to make sure that the inlet and outlet pipes are clear
of debris. If debris has started to collect around them, simply
take a shovel or stick and remove it until they are clear. This
can prevent future blockages which could in-turn result into
situations such as back-ups into the building. Something which
you really want to avoid :-) (We advise
caution if you attempt to open the access hatches on a septic
tank. Many of these hatches are very heavy and you could hurt
yourself and others around you when lifting them)
If you happen to
have a pumping station for your septic system it is recommended
that (if possible) you open it and peer inside to perform a
quick visual sweep. You should check for any wires might be
loose, or any unwanted debris such as grass or roots which might
clog the pump. Do your best to clean out any material which
is easy to reach and remove it. But when you are doing this
be careful not to damage the pump.
Another maintenance
tip, while not something most people can do themselves is to
have your septic tank cleaned (pumped) regularly. For some people
this may mean a monthly clean (mainly for holding tanks) and
others it might mean a cleaning every 2-3 years. This is a tip
which some might take lightly but it is an important one. If
you do not perform regular cleanings if your tank it might cause
irreparable damage to the septic tank and drainage field.
